My interest in the weather
I first started keping weather records in a small way nearly 30 years
ago with an outside thermometer and a rain gauge that collected rain as it fell.
After a few years I invested in one of the Electronic Packages which
measeured rainfall automatically, gave indoor and outdoor temperature readings, barometric pressure as well as wind speed
and direction. Within a year or two the anenometer had been jammed up by pigeon droppings. (It was on the roof and not easily
reachable for servicing). Then the anenometer cups were blown off by a very strong gust of wind. Hence no wind speed or direction
and as a result no wind chill readings.
My wife bought me a new outfit which we had fitted to the roof by a professional aerial
fitter which worked beautifully.......until the pigeons sat on it and broke it off.
I now have two electronic rain gauges giving different readings, two outdoor/indoor thermometers
reading approximatly the same and two barometers whose readings are reasonably in co-ordination but no means of reading wind
speed or direction. Together with the connections for both sets to my computer and the programs to set them up, they worked
out fairly expensive and lasted a very short time. Can anyone suggest a reasonably priced weather station which might last
a year or two longer than either of these?
Meanwhile I will continue to use the weather sites on the net, some of whose addresses
are given on my contacts page. I find these very accurate and interesting and I commend them to anyone with weather interests
